      Extremely pleasant staff.

Not imnpressed by sugar kept in a money bag in the bedroom tea making facilities. The double mattress was ready for replacing.

      Nothing.

Garden Lodge, contrary to what the publicity suggests, is not a relaxing place in the countryside, but a house situated on a busy road. The brochure mentions a swimming pool, but we were told that it was not available. The 'extensive gardens' were nowhere to be seen. Our rooms were attic rooms, both with a curtain at the far end. The rooms were cluttered up with unnecessary pieces of furniture and objects. The coverlets on the beds were shabby. The beds were uncomfortable: too springy, not firm, not wide enough. Our double bed was exceedingly narrow. These attic rooms get very hot. You can open a window and a skylight, which we did, but that means a noisy night because of the traffic. There was a file in the bedroom giving instructions and promoting the establishment. It contained publicity for strange spiritualism courses. I am not sure such proselytising has its place in a "family guest house". It also included an article in some local publication singing the praises of the establishment in the most extravagant manner, and the quality of the cuisine. Yet our cooked breakfast, which made it to our table 25 minutes after we had finished our cereals, was mediocre: eggs overcooked, sausages undercooked. One last thing: the brochure states that the Guest House prides itself on offering a very warm welcome. I am sorry to say that the welcome was decidedly cold, and surly, so much so that our thirteen year old granddaughter felt ill at ease in this house. In short, I would strongly advise Booked.net to think twice about promoting this overpriced guest house.

We were made very unwelcome on arrival, and a strong smell of rotting vegetables pervaded the whole house. Facilities shown on brochure and website was unavailable ie evening meals and spa. The pool area was an accident waiting to happen and the pool and garden had been obviously neglected for a long time. At no time during our stay were we made to feel welcome, no smiles, no polite conversation, nothing. Furniture and bedding etc has seen better days and you do not expect to find owner's clothes taking up the wardrobe space.

The proprieters son was very helpfull!! A very kind lad whom offered us a lift down to the harbour for the evening when we asked about calling a local cab!! As for the guesthouse it was homely and comfortable enough, would be more suitable for the more mature person!! , and u would have to like dogs as there are two little ones that live there we think that they were the owners!! , but all in all comfortable enough and breakfast was good !!!

Was a bit old fashioned for our age group!!

The room was very well stocked with toiletries and even had straighteners! It was extremely clean and very quaint english rooms.

Excellent environment and one appreciated the efforts to keep open despite the difficulties

I would have felt more secure in the shower had there been a non-slip mat and a grab handle.

Unfortunately the owners are now suffering significant health problems but are still trying to run the hotel with the help of staff. The business also seems to be fronted by the son. He was most unhelpful. I had booked dinner over the phone a few days before but was told on arrival that this was 'not possible' and that they have not been providing this for a year 'as stated on our website'. However it still appears as a service on their literature in the bedrooms and I had definitely made a booking. We found the young man quite indifferent and self preoccupied. We did not feel welcome in any way. This was especially upsetting for my wife and I, after a 7.5 hour journey with my 93 year old mother, The room booked for my wife and I was not available due to a radiator leak and we were allocated a lower specification room. However I still had to request a reduction on checkout. The dressing gown on the back of my mother's door was dirty, the overall standard of cleanliness poor and breakfast not to 4 star standard. See below

See above. I sensed that this hotel was once of a very high standard but this is no longer the case. I don't wish to sound insensitive to the problems experienced by the owners, but the facts are that this hotel is not of a 4 star standard in our experience. n.b. I booked a double and a single room for 22nd August 2011
